Hair loss affects millions worldwide, impacting confidence and self-image. While many treatments promise results, scalp microneedling has emerged as a practical and effective method to stimulate hair growth. This technique uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries on the scalp, triggering the body's natural healing process and encouraging hair follicles to regenerate. This post explores how scalp microneedling works, its benefits, how to perform it safely, and what to expect from this growing trend.

How Scalp Microneedling Stimulates Hair Growth

Microneedling involves using a device with fine needles to puncture the scalp gently. These tiny punctures trigger a healing response that increases blood flow and the production of collagen and growth factors. These elements are essential for healthy hair follicles and can help reverse hair thinning.

  • Increased blood circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles.

  • Collagen production strengthens the scalp’s structure and supports follicle health.

  • Growth factors activate dormant hair follicles, encouraging new hair growth.

Research shows that microneedling can improve hair density and thickness, especially when combined with topical treatments like minoxidil. A 2013 study published in the International Journal of Trichology found that patients using microneedling alongside minoxidil experienced significantly better hair regrowth than those using minoxidil alone.

Benefits of Scalp Microneedling

Scalp microneedling offers several advantages compared to other hair loss treatments:

  • Non-invasive and minimally painful: Unlike surgical hair transplants, microneedling is less invasive and requires minimal downtime.

  • Cost-effective: It is generally more affordable than many medical procedures.

  • Enhances topical treatment absorption: Microneedling allows better penetration of hair growth serums and medications.

  • Suitable for various hair loss types: It can help with androgenetic alopecia (pattern baldness), alopecia areata, and general thinning.

  • Improves scalp health: The process can reduce scalp inflammation and improve skin texture.

How to Perform Scalp Microneedling Safely

If you decide to try scalp microneedling at home, follow these guidelines to avoid injury or infection:

  1. Choose the right device

Use a dermaroller or dermapen with needle lengths between 0.25mm and 1.5mm which may be outlined within your treatment plan and clinical guidance based on trichoscopy and scalp environment. Shorter needles are generally considered safer for beginners and sensitive scalps.

  2. Clean your scalp and device

Wash your scalp thoroughly and disinfect the microneedling tool with isopropyl alcohol before and after each use.

  3. Use gentle pressure

Roll or stamp the device evenly across the scalp without pressing too hard to avoid damaging the skin.

  4. Limit frequency

Start with once a week sessions. Overuse can cause irritation or worsen hair loss. Overuse and poor depth-choice can in some instances lead to permanent hair loss.

  5. Avoid active scalp infections or wounds

Do not microneedle if you have scalp psoriasis, eczema flare-ups, or open sores.

  6. Apply appropriate topical treatments after microneedling

This enhances absorption but depends on depth and product specified within your treatment plan - but avoid medications and harsh chemicals immediately after the procedure.

What to Expect After Microneedling

After a session, the scalp may feel slightly red and sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. Some people notice mild flaking or dryness as the skin heals.

Hair growth results typically take several weeks to months to appear. Consistency is key. Many users report thicker, fuller hair after 3 to 6 months of regular microneedling combined with proper hair care.

Combining Microneedling with Other Treatments

Microneedling works best when paired with other hair growth strategies:

  • Topical anti hair-loss medications: As prescribed. Not suitable for all and can incur irritation.

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): Some clinics inject PRP after microneedling to boost growth factors.

  • Specific shampoos and serums: Use gentle, nourishing trichologist led products outlined within your treatment plan to support scalp health.

  • Healthy lifestyle: Balanced diet, stress management, and avoiding harsh hair treatments help maintain results.

Professional vs. At-Home Microneedling

Professional microneedling treatments use longer needles and advanced devices, offering deeper stimulation and often combined with PRP or other therapies. These sessions are performed by trained specialists and may provide faster, more noticeable results. A targeted and specific meso-cocktail may be used dependant on type of alopecia and commonly used for Androgenetic Alopecia and Alopecia Areata. In some instances a combination of meso-cocktails may be used where Alopecia may require further stimulation - e.g. Alopecia Areata and Alopecia Totalis where areas of hair loss may be more stubborn. At home-use products are available in between sessions. We normally recommend 1 treatment per month for 4 months, with results becoming visible after 2-4 treatments.

At-home microneedling is more accessible and affordable but requires careful technique and patience. It is best for mild to moderate hair thinning and maintenance after professional treatments. We often routinely recommend at-home treatments in between your clinical treatments and this kit is available to purchase.

A tailored treatment plan may likely incorporate both for optimal results.

Highland Trichology offers in-clinic professional microneedling treatments and support is provided by Level 3 AET trainer for home use microneedling using specialist equipment and clinical products (available to purchase). This blog is non-exhaustive and personalised protocols will differ between individuals and require consultation - consult your medical professional if you are unsure of suitability.

Length of treatment will depend on level of hair loss and will be discussed during your Initial Consultation. Where you may require preliminary scalp assessment prior to microneedling journey, this will be set out at Consultation. If you require blood test interpretation or trichoscope scalp assessment, please book a Follow Up Consultation prior to your microneedling session. All clients must have Initial Consultation first to assess suitability and discuss personalised treatment plan.

Safety Considerations and When to See a Doctor

Microneedling is generally safe but not suitable for everyone. Avoid if you have:

  • Active scalp infections or severe skin conditions

  • Blood clotting disorders or take blood thinners

  • Keloid scarring tendencies

  • Issues with collagen synthesis, connective tissue disorders or fibrosis

If you experience excessive pain, swelling, or signs of infection after microneedling, consult a healthcare professional promptly.
