What is a Trichologist?

We are clinical experts in the hair and scalp, able to investigate, diagnose and suggest treatment plans to help you, your hair and scalp.

We're the real hair loss experts able to diagnose and work alongside dermatologists, chemists and natural practitioners where the NHS waiting list is just too long....

Scarring alopecia can't wait that long. It's aggressive nature is permanently killing your hair follicles.

Simple.

What is Scarring Alopecia

Scarring Alopecia is a term used for types of hair loss where stem cells are attacked, sebaceous glands destroyed and the merciless attack on the hair follicle causes hair loss and fibrosis to the area hair once grew. Hair cannot grow back.

This fibrosing hair loss can be on the top of your head and widening (CCCA), on front hairline (FFA) or in similar patterns (LPP) amongst others. Your trained Trichologist can identify this using a trichoscope, few and far between is a scalp biopsy required due to the striking and clinical pattern this alopecia presents.

Alternatively, you could actually have scarring hair loss from chemical injury, burns or physical trauma to your follicles - e.g. severe bleach damage, however these will be discussed in a separate topic.

As a Registered Trichologist, I appreciate the emotional impact of your hair loss journey and that sometimes it's taken a lot of time and a lot of suffering before you booked your INITIAL CONSULTATION to take charge of your hair and get help.

Growing hair doesn't happen over night.

It's about following a consistent routine set out for you, getting the help you need from the right experts and importantly....starting sooner rather than later.

This week I diagnosed a further PERMANENT HAIR LOSS. The lady only wished she'd found me sooner. The sad part was had she....the hair may not have been lost anywhere near as much with treatments...

Whilst some of her hair is permanently gone due to scarring alopecia...there were still few signs of active follicles! It was FRONTAL FIBROSING ALOPECIA, a form of scarring alopecia where hair loss does not recover - and this is an exceptional case.

Where follicles are in limbo between life and death we may consider PLATELET RICH PLASMA THERAPY (PRP) to utilise growth factors and reduce inflammation to give routine treatments a chance to keep those follicles alive even longer.

PRP has so many wonderful emerging applications for many forms of hair loss. If you can keep the follicles alive there is hope to grow hair, but with scarring alopecia it really is a ferocious battle due to it's aggressive mechanism and overall once lost, the hair cannot return due to fibrosis.

Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA) needs medical intervention, prescribed medication to fight the unwelcome attack on hair follicles and whilst the aim is not to regrow, it's to limit the devastating impact of acute irreversible hair loss across the whole front of your hairline until it burns out around the top of your head.

'HOPE'

Hope is the best news we can have - some follicles had not yet fibrosed and shows how you need to ACT NOW!

The clock is ticking, this is one of the most aggressive forms of hair loss and often perplexes medical professionals of its origin. It's notorious for affecting post-menopausal women, but these women are younger and younger and now men are being diagnosed.

If you think you have signs of permanent hair loss or are experiencing unexplained hair loss and would like expert advice and help with treatments based in scientific efficacy - get in touch.

If you are considering a hair transplant due to scarring alopecia, the disease must not be active and have fully burned out for a minimum of 2 years. Even then, you must discuss the realistic potential for hair restoration with your chosen BAHRS registered surgeon. Don't be conned into a Turkey transplant or false promises...

Please note - where follicles show fibrosis, PRP cannot regrow hair. This lady is an exceptional case where all follicles are not yet permanently altered. The aim is to not further regrow her full head but to limit acceleration and destruction to healthy follicles.
